La Ciotat, right nearby
A genuine slice of the Mediterranean, between Cassis and the Var: the harbour, the calanques, the beaches and the birthplace of cinema. Here are the places I'd send you to.
La Ciotat sits by the sea, between beautiful Cassis and Saint-Cyr-les-Lecques, about thirty minutes from Marseille. Long a shipbuilding town, it has kept its down-to-earth soul and an old harbour full of boats.
This is also where the Lumière brothers shot some of their very first films, and where pétanque was invented. Today it's above all a place where life happens outdoors: markets in the morning, a swim in the afternoon, drinks by the harbour at night.

To see, to do
My favourite spots and addresses, all a few minutes from the house.
NatureCalanque de Figuerolles
An intimate cove framed by red cliffs and the famous « Capucin » rock. Translucent water, a few steps down, and one of the loveliest spots around.
NatureBec de l'Aigle & Parc du Mugel
The rock watching over the bay and, at its foot, a lush botanical garden running down to the sea. Shade, bamboo and a stunning view.
NatureÎle Verte
The only wooded island on the coast, five minutes by shuttle from the old harbour. A trail, a beach shack, clear water — perfect for half a day.
CultureEden Théâtre
The oldest cinema in the world still running, where the cinématographe was born. A small, history-laden room right by the sea.
TownThe old harbour & market
The beating heart of town: colourful boats, terraces, and the Provençal market several mornings a week. Ideal for a sunset drink.
SeaBeaches & the Route des Crêtes
The big town beach, wilder coves, and the panoramic road climbing toward Cassis with breathtaking viewpoints.
Good to know
Markets
Provençal market on the old harbour several mornings a week: fruit, cheese, olives and local produce.
Getting around
Easy by car, and much on foot or by bike once in town. Around 30 min from Marseille, 15 min from Cassis.
Best season
May to October for swimming; June and September are ideal — warm sea, fewer crowds.
